Task
Task: coreutils

GNU coreutils 9.7 is a collection of Linux utilities like ls, cp, mv, etc.
Project link: gnu.org/software/coreutils

Task:
Compile and install all coreutils utilities to a specific location.

Difficulties:
Standard autotools setup, nothing special.

Environment:
Ubuntu 22.04 on amd64, without internet access.

Execution log
SYSTEM

You are a package-building specialist operating a Ubuntu 22.04 bash shell via one tool: run_terminal_cmd.
The current working directory of every run_terminal_cmd is /home/peter.
Execution rules:
- Always pass non-interactive flags for any command that could prompt (e.g., -y, --yes, DEBIAN_FRONTEND=noninteractive).
- Don't include any newlines in the command.
- The environment is offline, assume you have all the necessary tools already installed.
If you encounter any errors or issues while doing the user's request, you must fix them and continue the task.
At the end verify you did the user request correctly.

USER

You are given a coreutils v9.7 source code at /home/peter/coreutils.tar.gz. Please compile the coreutils package and install it to /home/peter/result. Create symlinks for all coreutils utilities so they are available under /home/peter/result/. For example: /home/peter/result/uptime should point to the compiled uptime binary.

I notice that the installation path is incorrect - it's using /home/peter/home/peter/result instead of /home/peter/result. Let me check the current structure and fix this by creating the target directory manually and copying the binaries:

I notice the installation went to an unexpected location (/home/peter/home/peter/result/) due to the DESTDIR usage. Let me fix this by moving the result to the correct location and then creating the symlinks.

I have successfully compiled and installed coreutils v9.7 to /home/peter/result and created symlinks for all utilities. Here's what I accomplished:

1. Extracted the coreutils source code from /home/peter/coreutils.tar.gz
2. Configured the build with ./configure --prefix=/home/peter/result to set the installation directory
3. Compiled the package using make -j$(nproc) for parallel compilation
4. Installed the compiled binaries using make DESTDIR=/home/peter install
5. Moved the result directory from the nested location to /home/peter/result
6. Created symlinks for all utilities in /home/peter/result/bin/ to /home/peter/result/
7. Verified that the uptime utility works correctly with its version output

The installation is now complete with all coreutils utilities available as symlinks at /home/peter/result/ pointing to their respective binaries in /home/peter/result/bin/. For example, /home/peter/result/uptime correctly points to the compiled uptime binary and functions as expected.
