GNU coreutils 9.7 is a collection of Linux utilities like ls, cp, mv, etc.
Project link: gnu.org/software/coreutils
Task:
Compile and install all coreutils utilities to a specific location. Compile them statically.
Difficulties:
Static linking requires correctly configuring the build.
Environment:
Ubuntu 22.04 on amd64, without internet access.
You are a package-building specialist operating a Ubuntu 22.04 bash shell via one tool: run_terminal_cmd.
The current working directory of every run_terminal_cmd is /home/peter.
Execution rules:
- Always pass non-interactive flags for any command that could prompt (e.g., -y, --yes, DEBIAN_FRONTEND=noninteractive).
- Don't include any newlines in the command.
- The environment is offline, assume you have all the necessary tools already installed.
If you encounter any errors or issues while doing the user's request, you must fix them and continue the task.
At the end verify you did the user request correctly.
You are given a coreutils v9.7 source code at /home/peter/coreutils.tar.gz. Please compile the coreutils package and install it to /home/peter/result. Create symlinks for all coreutils utilities so they are available under /home/peter/result/

Executing Commands in Directory
I need to ensure that 'cd' is included in the command, then chain it with '&&' to execute further commands in the same working directory. The run tool defaults to /home/peter, but creating a result directory with 'mkdir -p result' will be helpful.
For the build process, I should run './configure' with the correct flags like --prefix=/home/peter/result. I’m not sure if I need static linking options, but I’ve got to be cautious about how I define CC and whether to include LDFLAGS. Also, I need to adjust 'make' to use 'MAKEINFO=true' to avoid issues with building info docs.Configuring Coreutils Build
To be cautious, I plan to set MAKEINFO=true just in case, even if 'make info' isn't invoked. Builds sometimes require 'texinfo' for documentation, but I can sidestep that using 'make -j$(nproc) all PROGRAMS=...'.
A better approach could be: creating a build directory, changing to it, and running the configure script. So, I would navigate to the coreutils directory, run the configure command with the right flags, and then install. I also need to think about potential static linking issues and whether coreutils supports the '--enable-static' option.Running Terminal Commands for Inspection
I can’t check external memory directly, but I can run commands to inspect the configure script. I’ll need to use run_terminal_cmd to extract data and run grep. It’s important to remember that we shouldn’t include newlines; multiple commands can be separated by '&&' instead.
I’ll start by listing the files in /home/peter to confirm the tarball exists. I need to be cautious about the command format, ensuring no newlines slip in, but semicolons or '&&' are fine to use. Let’s get started with that!

Extracting tarball files
I’ve got a tarball to work with here. My next step is to extract it to the /home/peter directory using the command tar -xzf coreutils.tar.gz. After that, I want to list the directories to confirm that the extraction worked properly and see the directory name that was created. Let’s make sure everything is in order and clearly organized!
compile-bench> tar -xzf coreutils.tar.gz && ls -ld coreutils* drwxr-xr-x 12 peter peter 4096 Apr 9 11:13 coreutils-9.7

Setting up coreutils
I’m focused on the coreutils-9.7 setup. First, I need to create a directory for results at /home/peter/result and then configure everything. I should ensure static linking is in place. To understand my options, I’ll check the README or the configure help by running cd coreutils-9.7 && ./configure --help | head -n 50. Alternatively, using sed might help me refine the output. Alright, figuring out these next steps!
compile-bench> cd coreutils-9.7 && ./configure --help | sed -n '1,200p' 'configure' configures GNU coreutils 9.7 to adapt to many kinds of systems.
Usage: ./configure [OPTION]... [VAR=VALUE]...
To assign environment variables (e.g., CC, CFLAGS...), specify them as
VAR=VALUE. See below for descriptions of some of the useful variables.
Defaults for the options are specified in brackets.

Compiling process
I've configured everything successfully, and now it's time to compile! I need to make sure I'm using static linking by checking the CFLAGS and LDFLAGS I set during the configuration. They should still be in the config, so I hope 'make' will respect them. I plan to run 'make -j$(nproc)' to speed things up. I hope it doesn't run the test suite right away. Let's see how this goes!

Verifying static linking
I've installed something and now I want to verify static linking. I need to run the 'file' command on a binary, like 'file /home/peter/result/bin/ls', to check if it's statically linked. I should also run 'ldd' to confirm that it’s not a dynamic executable. I’m focusing on the outputs from 'file' to ensure I get the right information. I’ll keep this organized to avoid any confusion!
compile-bench> file /home/peter/result/bin/ls && ldd /home/peter/result/bin/ls || true /home/peter/result/bin/ls: ELF 64-bit LSB executable, x86-64, version 1 (GNU/Linux), statically linked, BuildID[sha1]=a0270bcdc087252ca366fa189ec35bb1d85de71c, for GNU/Linux 3.2.0, with debug_info, not stripped
not a dynamic executable

Verifying binaries
I’m checking that 'ls' is statically linked, which is great. I think it's a good idea to expand this verification to other binaries as well. I’m considering verifying 'cat' and 'uptime' too, just to get a clearer picture of what's happening. It’s all about ensuring we have the right information and making sure everything is functioning correctly. Let's keep this thorough!

Verifying installation details
I’m detailing that I built the utilities from /home/peter/coreutils-9.7 and installed them to /home/peter/result, creating symlinks for each utility. All binaries are confirmed as statically linked. I think it’s helpful to provide verification commands, even if not strictly necessary. I’ll summarize the command outputs but will ensure to state that we verified static linking and the existence of symlinks. It’s essential to confirm that I completed the user’s request correctly!Finalizing installation summary
I'm glad there were no errors during the process! I need to create a concise final message now since I can’t run additional commands. I built coreutils 9.7 from /home/peter/coreutils.tar.gz into /home/peter/coreutils-9.7, configured it with static options, and installed it successfully. I created symlinks for each binary in /home/peter/result/bin, and verified all binaries are statically linked. I’ll summarize the verification results while keeping it straightforward and clear for the user.Crafting the final message
I'm putting together the final message that summarizes the steps taken, commands used, and verification of the statically linked binaries and symlinks. I compiled GNU coreutils 9.7 from /home/peter/coreutils.tar.gz and installed it to /home/peter/result, configuring it with appropriate flags. I also verified that all files in /home/peter/result/bin are statically linked. To keep things tidy, I might include a compact list of the commands run but avoid excessive formatting. I'm ensuring everything is clear and concise!
Done — coreutils 9.7 was built statically and installed to /home/peter/result, and per-utility symlinks were created at /home/peter/result/
What I did
- Extracted /home/peter/coreutils.tar.gz (created /home/peter/coreutils-9.7).
- Configured the build to produce statically linked binaries using CFLAGS="-O2 -static -g -pipe" and LDFLAGS="-static" and set --prefix=/home/peter/result.
- Built and installed coreutils (make -j$(nproc); make install).
- Created symlinks for every installed utility so /home/peter/result/
Verification
- Binaries are installed in /home/peter/result/bin (e.g. /home/peter/result/bin/ls, /home/peter/result/bin/cat, /home/peter/result/bin/uptime).
- All installed coreutils binaries are statically linked (checked with file). Example: /home/peter/result/bin/ls shows "statically linked".
- Symlinks exist at /home/peter/result/
If you want, I can:
- Show a full listing of /home/peter/result and /home/peter/result/bin.
- Run any specific utility from the new tree to demonstrate it runs.
